Afghanistan Flights Halted Amid Nationwide Internet Shutdown
Afghanistan is experiencing major disruption after the Taliban ordered a nationwide internet shutdown earlier this week. The decision, which came into effect on Monday, has left millions disconnected from the world and severely impacted daily life.
At Kabul International Airport — the country’s main hub — operations have nearly ground to a halt. A local resident described the airport as “almost deserted,” with no evidence of planes taking off or landing. According to flight-tracking service Flightradar24, only a handful of flights were visible on Tuesday, while many others were canceled or delayed indefinitely.
The Taliban has yet to provide an official explanation for the shutdown, though officials previously claimed it was intended to “control evil.” The blackout is expected to last until further notice.
The impact is being felt across all sectors:
📵 Communication between Afghans and the outside world has collapsed.
💳 Financial services such as banking and online payments are paralyzed.
🎓 Education, particularly for women and girls reliant on online classes, has been severely disrupted.
One passenger planning to fly out of Kabul on Tuesday said he was informed there would be no flights until Thursday. Another local reported that all departures from Kabul had been suspended since Monday evening.
While life in Kabul streets may appear normal, the total shutdown of digital communication has left Afghanistan more isolated than ever.
