 Somalia’s Growing Role in East African Politics

Somalia is steadily asserting itself as a key player in the East African political landscape.

This week, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with the newly appointed Somali members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) — marking another step toward strengthening the country’s regional presence.

By engaging more actively with East African institutions, Somalia is signaling its determination to move from the margins of regional politics to the center of decision-making.

The country’s participation in EALA is not merely symbolic; it reflects a broader vision of integration, stability, and mutual growth across the Horn of Africa. President Mohamud’s administration views regional diplomacy as a foundation for Somalia’s long-term recovery and prosperity.

Closer collaboration with neighbors in trade, security, and governance could help tackle shared challenges such as terrorism, drought, and migration. At the same time, it enhances Somalia’s credibility as a partner committed to regional peace and cooperation.

However, integration is not without its challenges. Political fragmentation at home and security threats from Al-Shabaab remain serious obstacles to progress.

Yet, Somalia’s growing presence in regional forums offers a valuable opportunity to amplify its voice, build trust, and attract investment that can sustain long-term development.

For regional diplomacy to have real value, it must ultimately serve the Somali people. Engagement with East Africa should translate into jobs for youth, better education, stronger infrastructure, and a safer environment for ordinary citizens.

Without tangible benefits to society, regional integration risks becoming just another political slogan rather than a genuine path to national renewal.

True diplomacy begins when the well-being of citizens is the ultimate goal.
