The Repeated Targeting of Somali-Americans in Minnesota

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted the Somali community in Minnesota, claiming they have “lost millions of dollars illegally” and suggesting they are undermining the state’s security. Each time he addresses Somali-Americans, he also mischaracterizes the Somali government as dysfunctional, spreading misinformation about the country.

These repeated statements are not isolated political commentary—they are a form of pressure and intimidation aimed at Somali-American voters. They also reinforce Trump’s image as a hardline leader defending the U.S. against illegal immigration and perceived threats to law and finances.

Somali-Americans cannot rely solely on social media reactions. They need leadership that directly engages with politicians, responds to misrepresentations, and participates in mainstream media discussions. Without self-representation, others will define your community, often negatively.

It is crucial for Somali-Americans to strengthen relationships with Congress, the Senate, and other U.S. policymakers to ensure the community has allies when facing political pressure. The energy previously spent on clan or regional mobilizations should now be united to address legal gaps, prepare for legal defense, and safeguard the community, as Trump’s focus on Minnesota is tangible and could have consequences if the community remains divided.

Regarding defamatory statements about Somalia, the Somali government must consider a diplomatic response. While the government may not be able to take strong actions, the Somali Embassy in Washington can work with Somali organizations to produce official reports highlighting Somalia’s progress, security in Mogadishu, and state-building efforts.

Now more than ever, Somali-Americans must be vigilant, united, and proactive in protecting their rights and reputation.
