Somalia Warns Against Unauthorized Agreements, Cancels All Deals With UAE
The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a strong warning that no agreements can be entered into without its official knowledge and approval, following a cabinet decision to cancel all agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Speaking to the BBC, Somalia’s Minister of Information, Daud Aweis, confirmed that the Council of Ministers reached the decision during a meeting held in Mogadishu. He stated that the Somali government has formally terminated all existing agreements with the UAE.
According to the minister, the canceled agreements include those signed directly by the federal government as well as deals entered into by regional administrations or individual government institutions. Among the affected projects are UAE-linked activities in Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo.
“The decision was made by the Council of Ministers and clearly states that the Federal Government of Somalia has officially suspended all agreements with the United Arab Emirates,” Minister Aweis said. “This includes agreements made with regional administrations or through various government bodies.”
He emphasized that, under Somali law, the federal government holds sole authority over national sovereignty and international agreements. Any deal implemented inside the country, he added, must receive prior approval from the federal government to be considered legal.
The announcement underscores Mogadishu’s position that Somalia’s unity and sovereignty cannot be undermined through parallel agreements made without federal consent.
