Mexico on Edge After the Death of CJNG Leader Al Mencho

Mexico has plunged into one of its most dangerous security crises in recent history following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as Al Mencho—the ruthless head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Al Mencho was critically wounded during a special military operation on Sunday and later died from his injuries. For years, he ranked among the most wanted criminals in the world, with the United States placing a $20 million bounty on his head. Multiple reports suggest that US intelligence played a facilitation role in the operation, although Mexican special forces carried out the mission.

Nationwide Chaos and Retaliation

Following confirmation of his death, CJNG launched a wave of violent reprisals across Mexico. Airports, government facilities, fuel depots, banks, and other strategic sites were set ablaze or attacked. Armed confrontations between cartel forces and security units continue in several regions.

CJNG’s firepower and tactical coordination are particularly alarming. The group reportedly includes former intelligence officers and elite Mexican commandos, many lured by massive financial incentives. This has allowed the cartel to operate with military-level training and discipline.

A Shadow Over the 2026 World Cup

The unrest has now spilled into the international arena. Mexico, one of the host nations of the FIFA World Cup 2026, is facing growing concern over its ability to ensure safety. According to local reports, many football fans have already canceled tickets for matches scheduled to take place in Mexican cities.

A Revenge Years in the Making

The roots of this dramatic turn trace back to a critical mistake made by CJNG in 2020.

In June of that year, cartel gunmen attempted to assassinate Omar García Harfuch, then a senior intelligence official, in a brazen daylight ambush in Mexico City. His armored vehicle was hit by dozens of bullets, and he was shot three times—but survived.

Five years later, Harfuch was appointed Mexico’s National Minister of Security and Civilian Protection. Armed with deep intelligence expertise and unprecedented authority, he launched an aggressive nationwide crackdown on drug cartels, with CJNG at the center of his campaign.

The Final Order

Born to a Lebanese-Mexican mother and a father who previously served as Mexico’s security minister and intelligence chief, Harfuch comes from a lineage deeply rooted in national security. His grandfather also once held the position of security minister.

Yet it was Omar García Harfuch himself who made history—by authorizing the operation that ended the life of Al Mencho, one of the most feared criminal figures in Mexico and North America.

What began as a failed assassination attempt in 2020 ultimately became the catalyst for one of the most consequential takedowns in Mexico’s war against organized crime.
