President Erdoğan Pushes Back Against Secular Criticism Over Islamic Education in Türkiye

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has issued a strong response to secular groups in Türkiye who have recently voiced opposition to the growing emphasis on Islamic education among young children, including Qur’an memorization, fasting, prayer, and core Islamic values.

Secular critics argue that these policies undermine the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and claim that Türkiye’s secular system is being replaced with an Islamist-oriented framework. They have expressed particular concern over the exposure of the new generation to religious teachings, viewing it as a departure from the country’s secular foundations.

Addressing these concerns, President Erdoğan firmly rejected the accusations, emphasizing that Islam is an inseparable part of the nation’s identity. He questioned why secularists are disturbed by children learning prayer and fasting, embracing the values of Ramadan, or collectively chanting Islamic nasheeds in public spaces with enthusiasm.

He further highlighted what he described as a double standard, noting that the same critics do not object when children celebrate New Year’s festivities or when schools introduce foreign cultural practices such as Halloween, which he characterized as disconnected from Türkiye’s historical and moral roots.

According to Erdoğan, the issue is not secularism itself, but rather an opposition to the nation’s religious sanctities, spiritual values, patriotism, and Islamic identity. He accused critics of hiding behind the concept of secularism instead of openly stating their true objections, calling on them to clearly articulate their stance rather than engaging in what he described as circular and meaningless arguments.

In a strongly worded conclusion, the president warned that rejecting the foundational elements of the nation — including the Qur’an, the call to prayer, love for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), fasting, zakat, and charity — would ultimately erode the country’s history, future, national unity, and statehood.

Erdoğan’s remarks have reignited debate in Türkiye over the balance between secularism and religious values, a discussion that continues to shape the country’s political and cultural landscape.
